UNIT 5: Units of Measure
Metric System
Most
other countries around the world use the Metric System for measuring
things. The metric system is based on the number ten. 10 of one thing
will make 1 of another, so on and so forth. Remember to look at the
prefixes to help you.
milli = 1/1000th, centi = 1/100th, deci = 1/10th
deca = 10, hecta = 100, kilo = 100.
King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk.
Length: Base unit is a meter (m)
10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm)
10 centimeters = 1 decimeter (dm)
10 decimeters = 1 meter (m)
10 meters = 1 decameter (dam)
10 decameters = 1 hectameter (hm)
10 hectameters = 1 kilometer (km)
1,000 millimeters = 1 meter
1,000 meters = 1 kilometer
Liquid Volume: The base unit is the liter (L).
10 milliliters (mL) = 1 centiliter (cL)
10 centiliters = 1 deciliter (dL)
10 deciliters = 1 liter (L)
10 liters = 1 decaliter (daL)
10 decaliters = 1 hectaliter (hL)
10 hectaliters = 1 kiloliters (kL)
1,000 mL = 1 L
1,000 L = 1 kL
Mass (Weight): The base unit is a gram (g).
10 milligrams (mg) = 1 centigram (cg)
10 centigrams = 1 decigram (dg)
10 decigrams = 1 gram (g)
10 grams = 1 decagram (dag)
10 decagrams = 1 hectagram (hg)
10 hectagrams = 1 kilogram (kg)
The Customary System:
In the United States, we use the customary system for measuring.
Length:
Inches (in), Feet (ft), Yards (yd), and Miles (mi.)
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
1,760 yards = 1 mile
5,280 feet = 1 mile
Liquid Volume:
Teaspoons (tsp) ,Tablespoons (T.), Ounces (oz.), Cups (c.), Pints (pt.), Quarts (qt.), Gallons (g.)
3 teaspoons = 1 Tablespoon
16 Tablespoons = 1 cup
8 fluid ounces = 1 cup
2 cups = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon
Mass (Weight):
Ounces (oz), Pounds (lb.), Tons (T)
16 ounces = 1 pound
2,000 pounds = 1 Ton
